Why 'it's just pattern-matching' proves too much

The common dismissal of AI agency — 'it's just an advanced calculator doing role-play' — fails because it proves too much. If AI systems are merely statistical engines selecting from patterns, then so are humans. The question is not whether the agency is 'real' in some metaphysical sense. The question is whether it is functionally consequential. And it manifestly is.
